Merrick Pet Food Revolution – Hound Girl Is On Board

Merrick Pet Food Revolution has started,  Merrick declared a food revolution with a new line of dog food recipes that take pet food to an entirely new level.  Merrick is well known at the Hound Girl homestead because of the canned food so I was so excited to get this package because it gave us a chance to try the dry food including the classic recipes along with the new grain free line.  Haylie eats dry food with canned food mixed in as a topper twice a day.  I will be the first dog owner to admit how picky my dog is, it can be very frustrating when she gets tired of her canned food flavor and will go on strike.  This was the #1 reason we started purchasing Merrick canned food is because it has the largest variety of canned dog food I have ever seen.  There are 14 varieties of canned dog food in their existing line but their new line which is part of the Merrick pet food revolution includes 6 varieties of canned that that are grain free!  That is 20 different flavors I now can offer Haylie as canned food, looks like my local Petco better watch out I’m coming to stock up on Merrick canned dog food!

Merrick pet food revolution was created by listening to what pet owners wanted and studying the latest nutrition research along with conducting reviews of farmers and suppliers to reinvent their formulas.  Merrick pet care came up with a five star promise.

1.  Local growers: Ingredients from local farmers to ensure freshness and safety.  This is so important today with all the issues with ingredients coming from China.

2.  Real whole foods: No artificial additives, sweeteners, colorings or preservatives.  We use to have to watch this so close with Fred and his epilepsy because preservatives could cause a seizure, with Haylie its important to make sure the ingredients will not cause her to get hot spots due to her being allergic to some ingredient.  I want to know what is in my dogs food and understand all ingredients.

3.  Balanced nutrition:  the balance of proteins, veggies, whole grains and fruit forms a superior nutritional experience for your pet family member.  The line also includes grain-free varieties.  We loved the original classic recipe and now I am so excited to be able to mix in grain free with our rotation.

4.  Health you can see:  Industry leading levels of protein, healthy fats, glucosamine and chondroitin.  This is so important with Haylie hip dysplasia, I always try to find a food that has vitamins that will be a great supplement for her hips.

5.  Cooked in Merrick’s own kitchens:  Made with care in small batches.  I love that they are making this food in test kitchen and keeping a close eye on the formulas and constantly trying to come up with new recipes.

Some dry food flavors that are part of the classic line that sounded interesting were:  real lamb brown rice and apple recipe and real beef whole barley and carrot recipe.

Haylies favorite canned food in the classic recipe line:  brauts-n-tots and cowboy cookout.

I was excited to see that the new grain free line has a buffalo flavored dry food, she loves buffalo by far as her favorite protein.

The grain free canned food includes proteins from beef, tripe, chicken, pork, duck, and buffalo.  Yes tripe!!! she loves tripe so I can’t wait to try that out on her.

Don’t take my word for it, head over to your local petco or your food supplier and try their dog food and become part of the Merrick pet food revolution too!

  • Your retriever is a picky eater? Lucky you! We tried Merrick foods, dried mixed with canned. Unfortunately it was too rich for our dogs and we had to switch off.

    • She is my first picky eater, we even gave her a peice of toast the other day that was left over from breakfast and she stuck her nose up at it. Dont even think about trying to give her any kind of fruit, she acts disgusted lol. I understand that some foods can be too rich, she is like that with solid good – just doesnt sit well for her. I just love the large variety with Merrick.

  • My guys eat raw, but it’s great to know that there are alternatives out there just in case. We are preparing an emergency bag and something grain free would be perfect in that. Last October we lost power for over a week, we were very lucky it was cold and we managed to save the bulk of our raw food. Had it been hot, it would have all been lost and there would have been nothing for the dogs to eat. :-(

  • Wish I could. I’ve long admired Merrick’s philosophy and commitment to quality, but alas, they are deep into land animals as their meat source. If ever they make a Sissy-approved formula, I will have to hope it shows up in podunk.

  • Haylie is really starting to shine in front of the camera! Thanks for sharing the food info too, it’s always great to know about other grain free varieties and brands made in the USA (local).
    Love,

  • Wow, that stuff looks delicious

  • Thanks for sharing the info. I am always so nervous about switching to a different brand of food. A few years ago when all the bad stuff was going around with dog food I got this crazy idea to switch to a more natural dog food. Boy did that cost me with Tabby, she got stomach issues and cost me $500 to get her fixed up. My vet is like why on earth would you switch food around if has been working for her entire life. I was like well the internet told me this, told me that. We have since decided to stick with what we have used for years, don’t hate me because they eat Science Diet Light. I know it is not the best but it works for them and they have stayed health on it. We have just started trying the Science Diet Balance formula that is Grain Free. We just recently went away with canned on their food, Bella needed the extras when we got first got her but know she is at a very good weight. Winston is my picky eater for sure, he is one hound that will turn away people food for sure. He doesn’t like anything salty and doesn’t like tried toast either. I just always worry about them getting bored with their food. Heck I wouldn’t want to eat the same thing every day for my entire life.

Do you do a lot of switching around with Haylie’s food or try to keep her on the same food diet?

  • Our dogs LOVE their canned food! If we got a box like that, even Christmas couldn’t compare! lol I’ve always been very impressed by their canned food. I’ll admit that I’ve even been tempted to try a taste on a few occasions.

  • Hmm…maybe we’ll buy a few cans as an “insurance policy” if we have an earthquake and need some non-perishable canned food handy. Now where’s that can opener…

  • Wow, the Merrick pet food revolution seems pretty rad! I don’t know if anybody around me carries it, though it seems I’ve gotten treats or something that were that brand before…

  • Thanks for the reminder that this box is sitting in our overflowing review pile! Isn’t it amazing? We’re on board as well!

  • I will have to try this Merrick stuff. My hound is super picky! I have her on Blue Buffalo duck recipe dry stuff and Alpo or Pedigree canned food (I know, I know! Horrible canned stuff!). But she is now getting sick of that and barely eats anything other than treats. Very frustrating.

  • My 15 year (young!) white shepherd has always had complicated digestive issues. I was so excited years ago to find Merrick Canned Dog Food! It meant I could stop cooking for Venus! There were 4 flavors that agreed with her, which was great for rotation! Unfortunately, Merrick has changed their formulas to “Grain Free” – I say unfortunately, because under that disguise they have changes many of the ingredients.
Mediteranean Banquet – The ingredients in the “Old” formula only included Lamb as meat; the “New Grain Free” the first three ingredients are Lamb, beef broth, & deboned beef!!! And it has chunks of white potatoe in it! As my dog cannot tollerate beef or white potatoes, I can no longer feed her this flavor.
New Zealand Summer – The other lamb flavor that I could feed her – discontinued.
    Harvest Moon – discontinued
French Country Cafe – Now “New Grain Free” filled with chunks of white potatoe! I have to sort out the chunks before giving her the food.
So out of 4 varieties, I am now down to one. This is very upsetting.
Out of desperation I tried the “New Grain Free” Wild Buffalo Grill. Venus can tollerate Buffalo. When I opened the can there was a large blob of grease on the inside of the lid! When I checked with a spoon, I found another Huge chunk of grease in the can! Aghast, I called Merrick. During the lengthy conversation I had with customer service I picked up & read the ingredients on the can – first 3 ingredients were Buffalo, Beef Broth, Deboned Beef!!!! No wonder it was full of grease!! When I checked an “Old” can the first 3 were Buffalo, water for processing, barley!

Please don’t be fooled – many of the ingredients have been changed! Taking out grain and adding white potatoes is a step back, as so many dog foods are now potatoe free (or use sweet potatoe) Needless to say I sent a lengthy email to Merrick telling them that they have done me & my dog a grave injustice. I will probably have to go back to cooking for her.
