Greenies From Mr Chewy Rock!

Aug 7, 2012 by     19 Comments    Posted under: Dog Treats, Review, Teeth, treats

Mr Chewy contacted me and offered to send me some Greenies, this was perfect timing because a few weeks earlier I had just attended Blog Paws and was able to meet the wonderful people from Greenies.  I actually spent some time at their booth to educate myself on these awesome dental dog treats.

I explained to the Greenies staff at Blog Paws that back in 2006 there was some issues with dogs and digestion in regards to Greenies. They assured me that there was a new formula that was re approved with the FDA and since then there hasn’t been any issues.  I figured I would get it a go, they gave me a teenie size Greenie because I explained I wanted to put the dental dog treat in a jar to ensure that it fully dissolves before giving it to Haylie.

Haylie has jaws of life and can chomp up anything and then she inhales it, she can take down a bully stick or rawhide with no effort but im always worried if the peices were too big and if they will get stuck in her intestines.  This is where Greenies can give me a peace of mind knowing that it doesnt matter how large of a peice she digest that it will be fully dissovable in her intestines.  I put the Greenie in a jar with some vinegar to resemble a dogs digestion system.  By day 3 it was completly soft and the water was a murky green.  Day 5 , I picked up the jar for a closer look and it when I moved it the last peice was dissenegrated – the water was still murky green.  It worked the Greenie was totally 100% dissolved, ofcourse I wish I had a picture but my husband through it out thinking I had already taken a picture of it.  * Please keep in mind I did not use chemicals to match a dogs digestion system exactly, I used what I thought might work that I had in my kitchen to get as close as possible to a dogs digestion system.

If you have any doubts I do encourage you to try this experiment before giving these great dental dog treats to your dog if it will help ease your mind.  These are great, Haylie loves the tast of them and I get to enjoy the satisfaction that they are cleaning her teeth at the same time.  We love nothing more than to place an order with Mr Chewy to get our Greenies!

  • I’ve tried Greenies as well, but since they have no nutritional value and I saw no improvement in Nola’s teeth (they’re already perfect) I only give them to her maybe once a week

    • I agree I think that would be the next step for Greenies is to add some vitamins or something to the normal dental greenies. I know I have given Haylie the joint chews which they make as well. Thanks for your comment.

  • Thanks for that info. Sasha does like greenies sometimes, but I did worry about them dissolving. That was a great post, thanks.

    • Thanks for stoping by, I agree that was my biggest concern about giving greenies. If you do decide to give them to her I would contact greenie and write about your concerns and see if they will send you some samples and then try the experiment I did so you can see that it does fully dissolve before giving them to her :)

  • Chloe and LadyBug love Greenies, but I only give them occasionally…the new formula does seem to be alot better than the old one! I wish I could give them more often, but they are kind of expensive…as treats go!! Thanks for the review! Mr. Chewy ROCKS!!

    • You brought up a very good point about the price, we have to buy the jumbo ones since Haylie is a 100#, Im not willing to spend that much to be able to give her one every day. Maybe some coupons from greenies or some price adjustments would help that out. Im so glad you are enjoying the new formula – I was a little nervous! Thanks for letting us know what you think!

  • We love Greenies! Cool experiment.

  • How clever of you to do an “experiment”. :) I still do not feel that comfortable with the product since I think our dogs could break chunks that they could choke on. I don’t think they are hard enough to actually clean their teeth.

    • It was either that or eat one myself lol – JK!!! I can totally respoect that you dont feel comfotable giving them to your dogs and there is nothing wrong with that. I ofcourse wish everything was made out of tougher materials with Haylie and the jaws of life but ive yet to find anything in the dental treat category :) Thank you for sharing your thoughts – I welcome all opinions!

  • I used to give Whisky a greenie a day (when they first started) but stopped after reading about how it could cause problems. I’m so happy to read this post coz now I can give Whisky Greenies again since she absolutely LOVES them! Thanks for doing the experiment! :)

    • Whisppy, I was the same way, I wrote off the company Greenies until I took the time to talk to them at Blog paws and conduct my own experiment, im so glad I did :) I love adding these into our treat rotation!

  • I love Greenies AND Mr. Chewy! They have an awesome subscription service, so I never run out. {And congrats on the new bebe, too–I can tell you all about baby sisters.} ;P

  • Very cool to know because this is exactly why we stayed away from Greenies because of the digestion problem. We have to give it another try it looks like, but we agree they is expensive. Sniffs, The HoundDogs

  • LOVE this post. Thank you. You know how I obsess about Sis’s digestive system… and her teeth that I don’t want to have professionally cleaned.

  • Great experiment! We did our review on the new JointCare Greenies and love them!

  • Love that you actually experimented yourself to make sure that the product was safe!!!! I can totally see myself doing the same thing. Since I rely on raw frozen marrow bones to keep Mazzie’s teeth and breath clean, I won’t be trying Greenies soon, but won’t hesitate to recommend them to others given the results of your experiment.

  • Good review thanks

  • I had a fox terrier who just LOVED them! Now I have chi’s and they don’t seem to care for them. The next dog I have, I’ll definitely have them try them too.

  • Grrrrrreat Experiment. Ernie and I LOVE Greenies.. we get one every week.
