Blog Comments – I Would Love Your Imput

BLOG COMMENTS

I would love to have your input in regards to comments.  There are two ways I can respond to my readers when they leave a comment – by email or on the actual blog under their comment.

I know that I have personally commented on some blogs and I keep going back looking to see if they responded and they never do.  Maybe people prefer not to respond at all?

This is what I need your help with.  I want to know from you as my readers what you would like when you leave a comment on my blog.

Please take a moment to answer the poll.

Thank you!!

  • I admit, I am bad about going back and responding. If it is a question or something, I try to post an answer within the next couple of days. But if it needs a personal response or I want to tell the person something, I send an email.

  • We’ve struggled with this, too, and wish Blogger had an option to check to “notify me of follow-up comments by email.” That way, it’s automatic!
I’m not good about responding to comments, though. Something Old Girl and I both need to work on!

  • I would prefer to receive an email response but this can be tricky if there’s no proper email address which means there is a need to look for an email. If this happens, I may end up not responding as it takes too much trouble. Or I may respond by commenting on the person’s blog (if I remember).

  • I don’t normally comment on others comments on my blog. I don’t feel like people go back and look. I don’t go back and look to see if anyone replies to my comments. I usually address comments in my next post. Hope that helps!

  • We barely have time to comment on blogs and so we rarely go back to see if there was a reply. We don’t generally expect a reply to our comment unless we pose a specific question. If we do, either an email or a reply via a future post is fine with us. Hope that helps.

Love that pic of your pretty girl:)

  • When somebuddy asks us a question on our bloggie we always go to their bloggie and answer their question in their comments. We don’t usually go back to bloggies to see if our question was answered… mom’s brain isn’t reliable enough to remember that we asked a question in the first place!

  • Heck after blogging for years I am just figuring out how to see various comments and replys. I would prefer an email to me unless it is a question I have asked and your response could possibly help other doggie owners. Love that Hailey is becoming such a model for you. Hope things are going good for you. :) (Wink Wink) Sniffs, The HoundDogs and Sherri

  • If someone asks me a question, I will usually email them, unless a) it is something a whole bunch of other people have asked (like on the last post about whether we gave the moose water) – at what point I’ll answer it in the next post, or b) something not confidential/personal, and then I’ll leave a post on their blog because I figure they’ll be more likely to see the answer if it is on their blog, rather than mine.

  • Love not being the first to weigh in and that my opinion is (at the moment) the prevailing one.

I don’t get not addressing comments. Once in a VERY great while, I’ll ignore one, and I’m sure some get lost in the shuffle, but in general… I assume blog readers who bother to comment are looking for a connection, either in the moment or something more lasting.

  • If someone asks me a question I go to their blog and respond.

  • What a terrific question!

The purpose of a blog’s comment section is to create a dialogue. If a reader posts a question, but the answer is handled by email, then the community does not benefit from the conversation.

Sometimes, I will email a person and let them know I have posted an answer (I might even include the answer in my email).

If the comment / question is really great, it just became material for a future blog post. I LOVE those types of questions as coming up with posts 365 days a year can be quite challenging.

And, finally, I will email if a person asks me to. Those type questions usually come via our “contact us” form and are not public. I NEVER share those comments without the specific approval of the reader. I assume they contacted me privately for a reason.

  • I usually just comment on their blog if they ask a question

  • Hey Kari,

I try to respond to all comments, although now that I get many more I find it harder to do. There is usually one or two days a week that I miss, but I do try and respond.

I did take the poll but wanted to tell you I prefer the response on the actual blog itself, and I like people whose blog I’ve commented on to come and check my blog out.

I am only speaking for myself when I say this, but if I continue to comment on someone’s blog and they never respond to me (especially if it’s a well thought out comment) I will stop going to their blog. That may seem trite and selfish but I think if people take the time to comment, they deserve to have a response. Just my opinion and many times I do go back to the blog to see if they have responded.

Great post, I like how you are asking what your readers want!

  • Great survey Kari! and I am watching the answers carefully! I started responding to comments when I moved to WP. My thought was that if people were taking the time to comment on my blog than I would take the time to respond to them It doesn’t always work this way but I try. However, I have discovered that many people do not come back and check to see the response, but some do. I really think it might depend on the content of the post. Some posts that I do are more in depth than others and I think for these posts some people are looking to see what I have to say in response to a comment.

If I had to choose I would say I would like to see “respond to comment in comment section.” This brings me back to your blog and perhaps brings me more interaction with you and your readers.

  • I don’t respond to comments, nor do I go back and check to see if there has been a reply to mine. There just isn’t enough time! I like to try to get to everyone’s blog so I can’t keep going back to check and see if someone commented back everytime I leave a comment. If you subscribe to replies then you get every reply to every comment not just yours. I just like the “you comment on my blog, I comment on yours” rule of thumb!

  • We can’t begin to get through the blogs we follow so getting back to see if a response has been left probably won’t happen!

This is a very interesting question!

    Thanks for asking for input!

  • When Asked a QUESTION… I go to the questioner’s Blog to answer… I like I when I ask a Question and the blogger comes to MY blog to answer. I really don’t like the inbox filled with answers… UNLESS it somethingy of a PAWsonal NATURE, Of Course.

I don’t have time to go BACK to a Blog in order to FIND an answer.

  • I know that it’s hard for me. I was going to try installing Intense Debate to let people know when there were replies, but I had trouble with the installation. I need to look into it a little more again. Generally, I try to remember to reply on other people’s blogs, because I don’t know if they come back to see replies.

  • I don’t go back to blogs and look for replies to my comments, but I understand that email isn’t an option unless you know the person’s email. Most of my comments don’t require responses anyway…

  • If people reply to me on their post I never go back and re-read a post. So would either need to email me or leave me a comment on my blog. :)

  • I never come back to a blog to see if they replied (Id forget who I commented on and who I should be checking back on). I always like if they come to my blog and leave a comment on a post as a response.

  • What a good question! Honestly? I’m not sure what my answer is. I comment on a lot of blogs, and so don’t necessarily remember to go back and see if I was responded to, and really, I don’t always need a response. There’s only so much variation that “cute picture” or some such is going to get! So, I guess if a response is necessary or seems expected, I’ll go up and vote email after clicking “Post comment”. Glad I worked that out!

I do want to have more “dialogue” with bloggers and even my own blog readers, and it seems like frequently we’re ships in the night, y’know?

  • I respond to comments whenever I am able!! I make it a point to do it…I am not always successful but I do my best!!

  • after reading the above comments, many are forgetting that on many blogs they can subscribe to responses to their comments :)

  • This is a very good question and I hope that feelings are not hurt by me not commenting on others comments. I agree with OP PACK, and Khyra. I really do not have a lot of time. I try to read eveyones each and every blog- and sometimes I know I have missed a blog. But we do not have time to go back and see if someone left a comment on our comment….. Gee,,, we never ment to hurt anyones feelings. We blog because we like to visit, and read everyones post.,, but sometimes there is not even time to read the blogs.

  • I try to respond to comments in the comments on my blog. I want to install something that sends them a notification (I like when I get those from other blogs) but I just haven’t had a chance yet!

  • Woof! Woof! We prefer email and/or leaving a blog comment on our current post. Typicaly we don’t go back to the blog where we ask ?.

  • Unless I know that the blog I’m visiting on responds in their comments – I rarely go back and look. I also don’t respond to my own comments that way. I reply by email when I can, I will visit a ‘new to me blogger’ for an email address so I can respond to the email. Failing that – I leave a comment on their blog and thank them for stopping by. Have met some fabulous bloggers that way.

For me, I just feel that I am better able to build a relationship (of whatever kind) by responding directly to the commenter via email. Things can be said in an email that wouldn’t be posted publicly. And I’m not talking about being nasty, but maybe sharing something a bit more personal than you would post on your blog. My blog is about sewing, knitting and my dogs. I share a bit about my family – but *if* I was fighting with my husband the general public would not know it.

  • K, I voted butt I wanted to choose two options and it only let me pick one Arg ;)

So, I’ll tell you how I voted. What? That’s against the rules?!*@! Heh heh Heh I luv breakin rules ;)

If I ask a ? when I leave a comment, which I only do if I really want to know something, then I’d like an email response whenever you get around to it (I figure within a week is plenty prompt; I know we’re all very busy :)
If I just leave a comment about your post, I don’t expect a response. I just enjoyed reading your post and wanted to say somethin k? :D You are welcome to visit me and leave comments too butt pawlease don’t feel you HAVE to return a comment each and every time. I find hard as I have tried that I just can’t manage that all the time. While I feel bad, I hope everyone understands and knows I will visit as soon as I can :)

  • I was torn on this one – I like either the response on my blog or an e-mail. Sometimes I don’t have a chance to get back to a blog where I’ve asked a question, or forget… Sigh…

  • My Mazzie tries to respond to all of her comments on her blog and we try our best to check out the blogs of all of the bloggers that comment on her blog frequently. When we’ve commented on your blog, we’ve always so much appreciated the reponse, regardless of how it was delivered.

Got anything to say? Go ahead and leave a comment!
