My Own Pharmacy

Jan 9, 2012 by     33 Comments    Posted under: Fred, Thyroid, vet

Once a week I have to sit down and divide and cut up Fred’s pills.  This week he had a few more because he was on an antibiotic for the growth that was removed off his side.

I’m sure many of you can relate to this picture.

Sure, I never thought I would have a dog that had to take daily medication twice a day.  I thought my pill cutter would only be used for my medicine.  Heck I don’t even have a pill organizer!!

For those that are new to our blog – Fred takes thyroid medication and phenobarbitol for his epilepsy.

As of last week there were not as many pills he was taking.  Fred had a thyroid level check and his blood test came back showing that it was still low so we had to up him a little more on this thyroid medicine.

Fred is feeling great so please dont worry.  Knock on wood we are still seizure free.  I would sit and cut and organize pills every day if it meant Fred would remain healthy and seizure free.

Cheers to all the other druggie dogs!!

  • Mom would need two pill organizers to fit all of Dad’s meds in there, but thankfully only Thunder has regular meds to take. His thyroid too, twice a day. We are happy to hear that Fred is doing well. Good thing he has such a conscientious Mom.

Woos – Phantom, Thunder, Ciara, and Lightning

  • We just have the three bottles of eye drops. One, twice daily. One, once on MWF, but at a separate time from the other drop. The third is only in case of an emergency, but it’s the one we have to take everywhere we go.

  • MOL – we hope Fred cooperates taking his pills. :) She does agree that she would pill us every day if it meant giving us a good quality life. Kisses to Fred….

  • Yep, been there done that. :) Sniffs, The HoundDogs (Winston, Amiee and Bella)

  • Heh. I used to do that for TaiChi (not cut up pills, but use an organizer) – it was the only way I could make sure I had given her her pills for the day (because sometimes the husband would be helpful and give her them, and not tell me…). When she crossed the Bridge, the husband (who takes a zillion different meds) got her pill organizer for much the same reason. Silly little things, but amazing how wonderful they are! :-)

  • Yep…Mommy’s been there..done that. Not just for one of us, but for 3 or 4 of us at a time. If Mommy wasn’t here for some reason, we’d be in a lot of trouble!

  • Glad to hear that Fred is doing so well!! We just get glucocimine/MSM in our food twoce a day…knock on wood!!

  • I hope you get to have them in yummy stinky foods, Fred!!!
I have to take a few things, too – Mom is thankful that they all seem to do what she and the vets need them to do! I hope yours do, too. Be healthy!

  • I can relate to those pictures, but I do up pills for my hubby every week, not either one of the hounds. Actually your Fred takes more pills than my husband! Poor Fred. How lucky he is to have a Momma like you to care for him! Glad to hear he’s doing fine!

  • Anything to keep them healthy, are you able to just put them in his bowl at feeding time, or do you have to hide them from him?

  • Woof! Woof! Happy New Year! We are back from our longggg Holiday break.

Sending Lots of Golden LOVE to FRED. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar

  • I’m one lucky pup I don’t have to take daily meds. MOM on the other had has to take four shots a day and other stuff. The only thing I need daily is love and food. You got a good mom there Fred.
    Blessings,

  • So happy to hear Fred is doing well!

  • Mom does that for me and my dad when she heads off to Florida to visit my gram.
Whatever it takes to keep you organized and healthy, right?!

  • Your such a good mommy to cut up and organize all those pills. I don’t take any – yet- but another puggy my moms had did take lots of medicines.
But my mommy uses a pill cutter to cut my food into tiny pieces for treats for me- so that I do not get too much and get fat,

  • We have 3 bottles of meds on the counter at all time. My bloods both take anti-hystimins meds and my boy takes antacid. My basset gets anti-inflamatories.

So glad that Fred is still seizure free. I can only imagine how scary that is. My husband used to have seizures. Would be worse in a dog. g

  • Hi Kari, wow whee we are only catching up. Congratulations on your engagement. What a way to start the new year. Well done!!!

We are amazed by the amount of tablets Fred takes, but he is a very large dog so must need a large dose of everything (we presume). We love your big fella Fred. His face is just amazing. Take care all. No worries, and love, Stella and Rory (and Carol).
P.S. We don’t know how to connect you so that your posts come up on our blog. Don’t know what we are doing wrong. We aren’t on facebook either.

  • You are a wonderful dog mom for helping with the meds!! My biggest challenge is getting the pills down their throats!! LadyBug can taste a pill a mile away…it doesn’t matter what the heck I put it in…she can always tell. I try to get liquid meds…but that doesn’t always work!!

  • Delilah takes thyroid medicine and antioxidants twice a day! I totally know what you mean, never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have a dog that takes medication.

I’m not as organized as you though….I just leave them on the counter and pop them in her food. :-)

  • Poor Fred, you do such a good job for him :)

  • Don’t worry, Fred, that sounds like my house totally! Did you ever see my pill pictures?

  • If all those meds keep Fred healthy and active, we are all for them! You are very organized. Dad just keeps ours in the kitchen cabinet and mixes them into our foods…we all have different bunches of medicine, too plus the vitamin and the glucosamine etc.

  • Great to meet another blogging Fred! Hope the medicine works for him!

  • Wow, that is one druggie doggie! Glad to hear that he is doing so well. I agree, what ever it takes, we’ll do it for them.

We also stopped by to let you know we awarded you guys the Liebster Award. See our blog post today for details.

    Love,

  • My father used to have to take a ton of drugs like that too. His meds used to take up the counter, it seemed like.

Sooooooo glad Fred isn’t having the seizures anymore.

  • So pleased to hear Fred is doing well! Make sure you take all those tablets Fred and stay free of those nasty seizures! Welldone to your Mom for being so organised.
Time we had some more photos of you!
