Whats in your food bowl?

In the past I have tried taking my dogs off kibble and giving them a home cooked meal but it became very consuming having to make sure I had the calories, vitamins and the time to dedicate to it. After awhile it became too much when you have 2 large dogs. I then moved to half home cooked and half kibble which worked great. Now that Haylie needs to be on a lower calorie reduced fat program to get her weight off for her hips I’ve gone to just adding home cooked food as a topper. I no longer calculate the calories and so forth since they each only get about 3 spoon full’s of the home cooked food.  Canned food is very expensive for the brands I buy so I figured I would make my own :)

Today I made the food for the week.

This week the ingredients are – chicken, potatoes, sweet peas and cantaloupe.

I normally follow this method: protein, starch, veggie and fruit. I used chicken this month because I used beef all last month and cantaloupe was on sale and last month they had a ton of sweet potatoes. I don’t follow any order or recipe.

I start with a whole chicken and pour some olive oil on it and pop it in the oven and forget about it.  Let it cool and take all the meat off the bone.
I make sure to get low sodium chicken broth – this will be used to cook the potato in
I take one whole baking potato and peel it and then chop it up and cook it in the chicken broth
Make sure the sweet peas are unsalted – I have to use canned because I cant find frozen peas unsalted.

I add the shredded chicken and peas and add them to the potatoes – I add the rest of the chicken broth and simmer for awhile.
I cut up the cantaloupe and put it aside, since I heat up the individual servings before feeding I will just add the cantaloupe when im putting everything in the bowl.
I found these snack size containers – I will use one container for each meal – the container hold about 6 spoon fulls – each dog gets 3 spoon fulls.
The end result!
Fred hated the cantaloupe and ate everything but it!!  He has never been a big fan of the fruit.

  • I love that you are feeding your dogs fresh food. Dogs are meant to eat real food and your dogs will be happier and healthier because of what you feed them. I can't tell you how many times our clients have complained that their dogs do not have an appetite for their dry food. I rarely give advice unless the clients ask for it and when I tell them the importance of feeding dogs what they are meant to eat (raw food) they often take my advice to heart but others continue feeding them Purina One or Beneful! Grrr!

  • We need tu talk tu r mom 'bout this stuff. We du git spechial stuff like bitz of chiken an'scrambled eggz sumtimez or raw carrot piecez or bitz of apple added tu r kibble but u guyz git a regular stew. That soundz soooo good. We FINALLY had a chance tu stop by from the Petz Blog Hop – HOWDY!

  • That's so smart how you do that. We feed pre-made raw food because I'm worried about how long it would take to make all the food each day; I love your preparedness!

  • I wish I could feed raw, I tried but Fred kept getting really sick afterwards and was constantly throwing up bile – we never got past the chicken :(

The teachers pets – how frustrating is that, I try to educate people all the time on food but they still feed beneiful and even ol roy (generic brand at walmart)! Drives me insane!!

Beagle bratz- thanks for stopping by!! sounds like yall get some yummy food too!

Two pitties – pre made raw, so its all packaged nicely for each dog for each meal? This sounds simple and less time consuming – is there a specific brand or company you get it from?
